Why the hell is a clear engine cover not one of them?!?

Because that'd be too impractical for a 2 seat sports car mostly used for weekends. /sarcasm

Because the engine doesn't look like that stock. It's a rather dull affair:

I know, because it's covered up, they don't try to make it look special. It wouldn't be terribly hard to spruce it up to make it look like what's in the picture, and put the clear cover on it. Porsche likes package stuff, so they could do an "Engine Appearance Package" with the accented engine cover and clear window to see it all.

Maybe it caused issues. If it was practical to do it then you'd think Porsche would offer it and charge $8K extra for it, haha
Ferrari nixed the clear cover on the 458 Spider due to some concerns. But you can buy an after market one. I forget what they said the issues were...

SOON Porsche will nix the H6 in the Boxster/Cayman

That would have been nice and most likely really expensive..

It has to do more with the practicality of it. The angle of the back window and driving position in the car make it... awkward. Plus you lose a big storage space unless the glass is reinforced/scratch proof. And lastly, in my forays into Caymans I have driven 2 with this mod and unless you doll up the engine (which is nothing like the one pictured) it just isn't all that great. Sorry to burst you ferrari-esque bubble :(

Haha most likely, it's probably cheaper to do it aftermarket, like it is currently.

Maybe, I just don't know what the issues could/would be. Maybe it has something to do with heat, that's the only thing I can think of. And I didn't know Ferrari even considered doing a clear cover for the 458 Spider, but if I had to guess why it didn't work, it'd be that it didn't work with the folding roof. They had clear covers for the 430 Spider and 360 Spider, but those were soft tops.

Yeah, the storage part would perhaps be a sacrifice, but there aren't many people who buy Caymans because of the practicality and size of the trunk, lol. Idk about it looking awkward though, looks decent in this shot.
And I know that it doesn't look like that normally, but as I said in another thread, the idea of an "Engine Appearance" package would include the window and the prettied-up engine.

Yeah I dunno either. If not heat then what else?
Here is the after market clear cover. It just gives you a little peak:

I had never actually looked at it until now. I see why Ferrari didn't do it. You can barely see anything anyways.

Ah LEDs. Now that looks cool. And it would get around some of the visibility issues. I still think the hatchback would get in the way of it, but that looks very nice.
